From the UNE catalog:

“Principles and practices of aquaculture from many perspectives. Topics include methods, hatchery management, product processing, and environmental issues.”

This class is the introductory class for the Aquaculture and Aquarium Science major. Throughout this class we were introduced to the types of methods that are used for growing out the fish. Also, we have explored the negatives of aquaculture as people perceive them which is holding back the field. As large aquaculture is relatively new there is a lot of trial and error happening. State run fish hatcheries have been successful to say the least because that is a form of aquaculture that people use and support if they purchase a fishing license from their state fish and game department. However, I am really interested in the part about using aquaculture for conservation and to be used in aquarium settings.

The oceans throughout the world are constantly at risk of becoming overfished because of climate change. With the increasing in ocean temperature and changing weather patterns these animals are facing the brunt of it. If we can find ways to support a healthier environment and promote aquaculture to allow for reduced fishing to allow the natural stocks to replenish themselves, I believe we will have a healthier ocean. Also, with wanting to work in aquariums if I can use aquaculture to sustain the aquarium needs then we could eliminate the need to big aquarium trades throughout the world. Being able to culture fish within the aquarium setting will not only help the environment because the animals will not be taken from the world but the fish will not have known a life outside of captivity.

Remember a healthy ocean is a healthy world!
